Walter had his suitcases, Pup in a dog carrier, and was as ready as he was going to get for a one-way trip back to 1945. He'd left all of his various anachronistic doodads back in the room, and the roomies were welcome to computer, phone, CDs, CD player, etc. Everything else was packed and ready to go.

Nadia was doing rather a lot of running around, today, what with trying to save Jamie from . . . himself. Still, there was absolutely no chance in hell she'd miss saying goodbye to Walter.

Even if it did hurt more than most other things she'd ever done.

She slowed from a rull run, to a trot, to a slow, dead-man-walking pace as she got close and went suddenly shy.

"Hey."

Walter turned away from watching for the car that was coming for him and tried for a smile. "Hey."

Even if he failed in that, Nadia appreciated the attempt. "You're going to write, right? Figure out what Arthur did to make sure his letters got to you and tell me what you're up to, and everything?"

"I'm going to write, and send souvenirs, and miss you." As long as Fandom's vagaries didn't muck that up. "And Pippi said she'd help us stay in touch if I have problems from my time."

Phoebe was getting really damned tired of saying goodbyes to the people that she loved. That didn't stop her from coming to say goodbye to Walter, whom she had adopted as a little brother.

Walter turned away from watching for the car and smiled wanly at Phoebe. "Hey."

"Hey," she said quietly. "Why do I get the feeling this isn't a Summer thing?"

"Not a summer thing," Walter agreed. "I'm going home for good."

Gwynn hated this whole goodbye thing. She hadn't gotten an e-mail since she still didn't know how to use a computer, but somehow... she just knew.

She approached him quietly, still not sure about how one was supposed to say goodbye without getting all teary.

If he figured that out, he'd share the secret with her. Butlers weren't supposed to get teary about anything.

"Hey, Gwynn."

"Hi Walter," she said looking around at all of his stuff. "You're going away, too."

Walter nodded. That pretty much covered it, after all. "I'm going away, too."

Alphonse was there; there wasn't any way he wasn't going to be. He shoved his hands in his pockets and tried to give Walter a bright smile in greeting in an attempt to counter how he was feeling, though the latter was making itself obvious. "Hi, Walter."

"Hey, Al." Walter was going to miss his roommate. Who else could freeze an entire swimming pool in moments, after all?

And he'd been so much fun to tease.

"You'll be going, soon?" It was a question with an obvious answer Alphonse knew, but it was better than standing there in silence. He didn't think he'd ever get good at this goodbye thing.

Did anyone really get good at this goodbye thing? "Yes. The things that I left in the room are for anyone who wants them. I don't need a computer in 1945."

What with Phoebe having gone to say goodbye to Walter, Anders didn't exactly have an excuse to say that he hadn't known.

"You know, I'd tell you you're not allowed to leave, but I know better than to try and do that," he said gruffly, holding out a paper-wrapped square bottle.

"Yeah. You know how it goes at a boarding school." Walter took the bottle and raised an eyebrow at Anders. "Thanks."

"Figured some ambrosia for the trip might not be a bad thing," Anders explained. He sighed and looked up at the sky for a moment, hands shoved into his pockets. "Guess it's about that time of year again anyway . . . people leaving and all."

"I think I might open the bottle the moment the car door closes." Walter turned the bottle over in his hands and pursed his lips thoughtfully. "You're going to take care of yourself, right?"
