I don't mean to post so much.

But since I've given up almost every single vice (except soft drinks) drawing hands soothes me.

Aww, I feel your pain.
Though I don't have many people asking me to do portraits like that. Usually they don't know what to think when I tell them I majored in printmaking. Perhaps they think I just made t-shirts all day. :P

Though next time someone asks, tell them you charge by the hour.

Did you charge a lot for the dog portrait?

Well I charge $15 an hour. An 11x14 watercolor takes between 3-5 hours. Though so far I'm landing solidly in the 4-5 hour range. But! I also mat it for them. Sometimes they want to buy the frame separately but if I get the frame I'll add the frame price to the total.

My watercolor teacher told me to charge $20-$40 an hour!

your coping mechanism makes for good fapping material so i guess you can keep on

re: your interlude, haha i used to be such a pissant in highschool that i never even considered people were asking me to draw shit for free (or, as in your case, the sad sum of $10). they'd ask or sometimes even just give me a photo and i'd be like, cool, that's $__, just put them in that PAY ME OR GTFO position right away so they had no chance of guilting me

okay but

now i wonder

what sort of lunch can you get for $10

are we talking taco bell here or......

I can find even gourmet veggie burgers for $10 or less almost anywhere. I don't drink so that would be it!

I would almost do it for a Punjabi Burrito (here) but too far. Do Punjabi's even really make burritos? THEY DO HERE! Yum.

i enjoyed cheese quesadillas from taco bell but cannot remember how much they cost. surely not $10. and a tuna foot long from subway was $5 because i remember the jingle!

LOL OMG did they pay those people to lick the plates or what :O and no punjabis don't make burritos. or if they do they don't call them that, anyway

now i'm hungry

but too lazy to get up and get food

My sister draws portraits and things, but she's not easily bought with a $10 lunch. You're more talented than a $10 lunch. You need to lay down the law, because most portraits with your talent would run at lest 25 bucks. My sister charges like 25+ depending on size and materials used.

Oh, and this goes without saying but those hands are gorgeous.

Hi. You don't know me, but I went through my 'friends of friends' link and found your entry. I hope you don't mind me adding my two cents.

I can't believe these people are giving you an incredulous look, like they're doing you a favor. A week away from Christmas, and they're hitting you up for portraits, and all they offer in exchange is lunch?

I don't know anything about portrait prices or how much effort goes into creating a portrait, but I know basic common courtesy. To hit someone up this late for something that special, they should be offering either double pay or one hell of a tip, not a freakin' burger.

I'm surprised and impressed you didn't tell them off.

And those are lovely hands. I hear drawing hands can be even harder to master than drawing someone's face. You're quite talented.

Howdy stranger! Thanks so much for your 2 cents, I need the ammunition!

I hate confrontation, and hate hurting people. I usually get roped into doing something I don't want to do then disappointing them later. I didn't tell them off, but at least this time I have some knowledge about how I'm shortchanging myself and every other artist out there so I have the courage to say, "I'm really too busy rn." I haven't even gotten all my gifts yet. (ONLY ONE).

I can do portraits and hands, I'm working on getting bodies, movement. I still suck in a lot of areas.
