Character Information
Name: Souji Okita
Canon Origin/Series: Peacemaker Kurogane
School Year: 6th
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Out of school living location: Bishopsgate Green, Coventry, England
Blood status: Muggleborn

Personality: Souji has a bright, playful, and cheerful personality, to the point of being almost childish at times. He loves games and sweets, he has a tendency to play harmless tricks, and he likes playing with little kids and animals (he even has a pet pig). He's also rather feminine, both in appearance and mannerisms, and he's entirely comfortable with that. Souji is kind as well, and interested in people to the point of being a bit nosy. He's always happy to listen to people's problems and give advice or help them directly if he can. If nothing else, he'll offer a shoulder for them to cry on.

While he's nearly always cheerful and upbeat, Souji isn't flighty or unintelligent - on the contrary, he's smart and focused. Years of kendo training have helped him center himself and have given him a sense of maturity that often seems very hidden. Kendo itself is something that Souji takes very seriously - his talent is rarely matched by those his own age, and so he trains with adults and he must have the gravity to match them. When holding a blade, Souji is deadly serious and even rather scary. At Hogwarts, he practices on his own (with a wooden practice sword), so it's rare for anyone to see him in this more serious mood. However, when confronted with danger of any kind, Souji's playfulness will disappear and be replaced with a competent, strong young man - whether he has a sword in his hand or not.

Though he gets sick easily, Souji is physically strong and full of energy. His friends and loved ones are important to him, and if he dedicates himself to a person or a cause he'll gladly use all his strength, both mental and physical, to fight for and support them.

Canon Background: Souji Okita was born to a lower samurai family and joined the same dojo as the other founders of the Shinsengumi, beginning his training with a sword when he was nine years old. He progressed quickly, being quite a prodigy, and was part of the Shinsengumi when it formed. He became the captain of the first unit of the Shinsengumi, and was widely known as an incredibly strong swordsman - when he got serious about fighting someone, he was unstoppable and merciless.

He met Tetsunosuke Ichimura, a young boy who desperately wanted to join the Shinsengumi, and arranged an introduction for him - and then arranged for him to see exactly what joining the Shinsengumi would entail. It wasn't pretty, but Tetsunosuke persisted and eventually became the page of Toshizo Hijikata, one of the Vice Commanders of the Shinsengumi and Souji's close friend (very close). Souji became a kind of mentor and friend to Tetsunosuke, while others in the Shinsengumi saw him as a warning of what Tetsunosuke could become. It's implied that Hijikata refused to make Tetsunosuke a full-fledged member of the Shinsengumi because of his regret at the killer Souji had become.

Not too long after Tetsunosuke joined the Shinsengumi, they were involved in the Ikedaya Incident - the storming of a inn full of revolutionaries, including the arsonist and murderer Toshimaro Yoshida. Souji fought him and in the end beheaded him so that Tetsunosuke wouldn't have the man's blood on his hands. Meanwhile, his recurring cough began to get worse and he coughed up blood - though it was unclear whether it was from the damage he took during the fight or the cough itself.

A year or so after the Ikedaya Incident, the other Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi, Yamanami, fled the group. Souji had been friends with him for many years, and he tracked Yamanami down and brought him back, begging him to make up an excuse so he wouldn't have to commit seppuku - the punishment for desertion. But Yamanami refused to, faking an attack on Hijikata, knowing that Souji would attack him reflexively. In extreme pain and slowly bleeding to death from the wound Souji had inflicted, Yamanami asked him to serve as his second and complete the seppuku. Souji complied and beheaded his friend.

Unsurprisingly, Souji was very affected by this. He had mostly recovered his cheerful personality by the time a doctor visited the Shinsengumi and discovered that he had an incurable, deadly disease - the cough that would not go away. Souji, apparently already aware of this this, asked him to keep it a secret. The manga is still unfinished, but the real life Souji Okita died of tuberculosis when he was 25.

Background (AU!Canon; HP): Dirty. Though he was born in Tokyo, Souji's parents moved to England for business when their son was only five. Growing up, he had a delicate constitution and a tendency to fall ill easily. In order to make both his body and his ties to their homeland stronger, his parents encouraged him to take up kendo when he was nine. Souji took to this like a fish to water, quickly outstripping his peers and entering and winning competitions. It helped him mature quickly and improved his physical strength, but didn't do much for his constitution - he still gets sick practically every time someone so much as sneezes near him.

When he was eleven, he received a letter inviting him to Hogwarts. At first his parents thought it was a joke. Magic wasn't real, after all! But like most Muggle parents, they were convinced after the letters kept coming and coming, and allowed their son to attend this strange school as long as he promised to continue his training when he could. Souji, excited by the strange new world he'd suddenly been invited into, went happily. Like any Muggleborn, it took him some time to get used to how the wizarding world worked, but he's grown to love it.

He still returns home every break to train with his kendo teachers, as well as practicing on his own while at school, but Souji has also learned to love doing magic. He particularly likes Care of Magical Creatures, due to his love of animals, but his best subject is probably Defense Against the Dark Arts - Souji seems to have an ability for self-defense, though he isn't as naturally gifted at magic as he is at kendo. Diana.

How would your character fit in to each House?
Gryffindor: Souji certainly isn't lacking in bravery or courage. He's not one to run headlong into danger without thinking first, but he's very likely to think it over and then go in anyway without flinching, particularly if he's doing it for someone he cares about or something he believes in.
Hufflepuff: Souji is both loyal and a very hard worker. He practices kendo regularly despite being far from his teachers, and he would never dream of betraying a friend. Though he likes to tease and play tricks on people, it's all in good fun and he wouldn't do it if it involved something important.
Ravenclaw: While Souji is intelligent and creative, he's not exactly the most studious person around. He's more likely to abandon his studies to practice or play games. He likes to learn, but he'd rather be outside enjoying himself than inside studying.
Slytherin: Though he's a bit cunning and a good leader, Souji's only real ambition is to improve his own skills. His resourcefulness, though it exists, is mostly used for playing games and teasing his friends. In a difficult situation, he'll do whatever needs to be done, including lies and deception (and he'll do it well), but generally Souji prefers not to take that route if he can help it.

Sample Journal Entry: Ah, I found my journal after so long! It turns out it was under my textbooks from last year. I brought them along thinking I'd use them as reference this year, but well... maybe I haven't been working on my homework as hard as I should. But there's always something fun going on, you know!

Speaking of which, I can't wait until we get a real snowfall. This little stuff doesn't count at all, and I want to have a snowball fight! That's the best part about winter, after all. But there just hasn't been enough snow yet. So unfair~!

When it does finally snow, though, I promise my team will win. I need some brave generals to defend the snow fort we'll build! Who's in?

Sample Interaction Post in Third Person: 'Dear Saizo,' Souji wrote, 'Hogwarts has been really fun this year! I'm doing pretty well in all my classes, and the new first years are so much fun. But I broke one of my practice swords yesterday, and that means I only have one left. Do you think you could ask my parents to send another?'

He smiled and thought about what to write next, absentmindedly chewing on the end of his quill and then spitting out feather bits. Muggle pens were so much better for chewing, really. His parents would definitely send him another practice sword, along with yet another letter telling him to stop writing letters to his pet pig and write to them instead. But that wouldn't be very much fun, and then Saizo would think Souji didn't love him anymore.

He was trying to decide what to write next when he heard a commotion from the common room. Tilting his head, Souji could hear the faintest sounds of chatter and good spirits from his housemates. It sounded like someone had gotten a package from home, and Souji perked up. Other students getting packages from home often meant exciting new wizarding sweets, and if there was one thing Souji loved about the wizarding world, it was the sweets. (Actually, there were many things Souji loved about the wizarding world, but sweets were definitely among the top five.)

It didn't take much thought for Souji to decide that his letter could wait. He set it aside and stood up, stretching. Time to see if his housemate felt like sharing - and if not, he could emply Candy-Getting Scheme #1 (also known as puppy dog eyes). If that was unsuccessful, he'd move on to #2 (cough and look sad) or #3 (still undetermined, but Souji was good at thinking on his feet). Either way, he could use a little fun.

Smiling, Souji headed out to the common room.
