First, the superficial. The world of sports loves me this year. My Tampa Bay Lightning just won Lord Stanley's Cup a few days ago, and now my Pistons are about to finish off the Lakers and win the NBA championship. I'm pretty pleased, and enjoy every time I turn my television on to watch these games, although I'm going to miss the seasons, because ( Read more... )

ha, you are lucky to be a pistons fan in florida right now. oh! happy reading to you. vonnegut makes me laugh out loud. i must say i envy your position of being surrounded by summertime creature comforts. but i know what you mean about ann arbor. there was a brief period of time when i didn't want to be anywhere else.

happy birthday to the kitty! gosh they grow up so fast. patience is only 3 and he's already a grumpy old man...

I joined the military to get whiter teeth. After a week my teeth were sparkling clean, and I never once got shot to death.

On a more serious note, the military neglects to mention how poorly the majority of its graduates fare in life. It turns out the vast majority of ex-soldiers turn up lazy, fat, unemployed, and drugged in highway underpasses across america. There are some theories about this: lack of enforced structure in the real world, the pesky business of providing meals and shelter for ones self, etc. You are too old anyway, and even if you were young, you wouldn't want to sacrifice that much time. It's possible to stay for just 2 years, but through the deception and bureaucracy they often stick you for 6.

By the way, I never joined the military. What I did was buy a bootlegged boot camp manual, and tried to live by its instructions. It informed me to, among other things: exercise, brush my teeth, bathe, and memorize poems to my rifle.

but yeah, back in the real world, I'd lack the structure again, and be right at the same place.
