Outside of a traditional college/university setting, do you have any experience with learning a foreign language? If so, what was the method of your learning, and how effective was it?
Married to a Fernando and lived in Spain for three years. I understand a lot of Spanish and can speak some and make myself understood. I do get too shy to speak it, though.
Defense Language Institute, about 50% immersion, results far surpass academic classroom methods. That said, the senior ranking student spoke five languages already and learned them all in bars.
I've heard good things of Rosetta Stone, but haven't made time to mess with it. Maybe after I graduate my Electrician's Apprenticeship. (I need to see if learning Spanish counts towards my mandatory continuing education... if it doesn't, that's just sad)

I also learned Russian from a native speaker (and kept it up for years with books).
