Day 5 in Vancouver

Aug 03, 2006 20:20

So, I'm going to skip Days 3 and 4 because the photos are on my laptop at the moment. I'll get back to them at some point, but the big news for today was that

First the facts...
Grouse Grind a.k.a Mother Nature's Stairmaster
Distance - 2.9 km (~1.8 miles) straight up Grouse Mountain
Elevation Change - 853 metres (2,800 feet)
Average Hiking time - 1:30 hours
My time - 1:26 hours (There's nothing more refreshing than finding out that you are average. Thankfully, this is average among the people fit enough to attempt this in the first place)

The beginning...

Not a good sign (in more ways than one)

They were right about the stairmaster thing. I was panting by the first hundred metres.

About the only piece of level land on the climb (at about this time, I began questioning my sanity)

Hellooooo. Ever heard of switchbacks? Geez!

Much gasping, panting and swearing later, our hero reaches the 3/4 mark.

Finally! Light!

Time for celebration!

That's a pretty nice view...

But wait... There's more to climb

Now *that* is a view!

For *only* $200 you can paraglide down Grouse Mtn. Our intrepid hero settles for the Cable Car.
