heh, my mother had the same complaints you do about 'broken flowers' though she thinks the girlfriend at the beginning and the neighbor set it all up for him to 'grow up', which is as good a guess as any i would think.

i liked that film a lot. finally saw it the other day. i love the part where they're talking about going into 'water' instead of real estate. "if you're dying of thirst you're not gonna want a drop of oil, or of gold..." "boy, you're certainly right there.' hahaha.

seriously, people do say the next huge wars are going to be over (clean) water.....

the set-up for the movie seemed kind of awkward. the neighbor theory seems pretty good, since he was so gungho about the whole idea immediately... but... i think it would've been a stretch for him to think that mr. aging giogolo would've even mentioned the letter... the whole carrying mail over to someone else's house thing and opening it there... how often does that happen? have you done it? i haven't. it just felt... so...unnatural! which is nitpicky i guess, but it stood out in a way where it doesn't tend to stand out in other movies....

i have a feeling the director was trying to do some things that went over my head maybe.

yeah, i thought that too at first about the carrying the letter over, would never happen, but it amounts to the same thing as bill murray at some point mentioning the letter and then the neighbor asking to see it.
