but the uae is not the same thing as dubai ports international. they already run ports around the world without incident. security will still be handled by the coast guard and the us customs service. you are engaging in the same sort of demagoguery as the "ultra-extremist"s. dubai is actually pretty liberal for an arab regime. granted that is not very liberal but it's more interested in economics than religious fanaticism, wahabism is not the force there that it is in say saudi arabia. the idea that this issue should be decided on by opinion polls is ridiculous. most of the opposition to this deal has been drummed up by unions of port workers because they fear the threat of modernization. your beloved ports in singapore and hong kong run more efficiently, 50% more cargo than LA, with fewer workers. the "ultra-extremists" might find it easier to turn a deaf ear to popular unrest should they take on massive layoffs. look who is on your side- pat buchanan, hilary clinton and carl levin, you've got the losing side by the tail

if customs and the coast guard handles the security, then tell me why longshoreman have colluded with drug smugglers before. that would be completely pointless if security is completely out of their hands. but the fact is the customs and the coast guard aren't completely responsible for security. the company and the employees can provide aid for getting around the system. and with the system in the us that already offers almost no protection at all from bringing in.... anything... (which is a much bigger problem clearly) why hand it over to one of only a handful of countries that recognized the taliban, and clearly has a 'no jews' policy even after the holocaust, even after munich, even after 9/11--doesn't that conflict with the ideas of being free trade/anti-terror
