So I finally got to see MOJO!! Big thanks to
amphigoury for coming down to fangirl and watch with me, it is SO great to watch with a fellow fan. Plus, now I have another pub place to eat around central London :)
so, the SHOW!! Under the cut for spoilers!
Sorry so long winded, it's also for my own remembrance.
I wasn't sure I'd like the play per se, but I enjoyed it a lot, largely because of the stellar performances.
The theatre was, would you know it, the next block from the hotel I usually stay at in London. Who knew?? If I can keep awake, I'm gonna go and stalk stage door for the other nights I'm here. It's pretty small, so I reckon anywhere you sit, you can still get a pretty good view. Amph and I were in row D, on the right. Colin was mostly on the opposite side of the stage, but due to its small size, I could still see perfectly; plus for the jukebox scene, I think it was in fact a better angle.
The PLAY:
It was indeed very talkie, and not that short. Daniel was phenomenal and his duo act with Rupert was amazing. Daniel acted nervy, chaotic, snaps on and out of moments, and played it to perfection. Ben had the other lion's share of airtime and attention- he played psycho Baby well, but I didn't feel as chillingly disturbed as I could have- I think he did the manic parts well, but I "felt" his quiet menace rather less. Brendon was fairly effective too, at stilling the lot of boys desperately, but I think he could have done more with it, I'm not sure what. The final part, with the twist, where he breaks down, was probably good but I had my eyes elsewhere then, on Colin's poor Skinny ebbing away on the floor.
COLIN!:
First, I have to say -don't kill me- I did think he'd lost too much weight and was less gorgeous when I first saw him :( I KNOW the character is called Skinny, but STILL! Don't tell me he's THAT much of a character actor? BUT.. Later in the play, when he slid to my side of the stage, and the light caught his profile, he was totally gorgeous again. Cheekbones!! So I take it back to the extent that I now know why they say the cameras love Colin. He's like a chameleon - great for acting!
As Skinny, he was all jutting jaw and disturbed object of Baby's twisted bullying, and pleading with Mickey's character to do something. Once it was curtain call and bows, his whole face relaxed and he became COLIN again! The change was amazing, I was staring closing at him as he got up and bowed, the man really looked entirely different!
MORE COLIN OBJECTIFICATION:
The jukebox scene happened very suddenly, once the lights went up, there was colin tied to the jukebox, and Ben hurling himself at Colin and fake-humping him, then running to the opposite side of the stage, then running to Colin and repeating the humping, before grabbing the cutlass and running it threateningly up and down inside Colin's left thigh. And yes, reported mole on Colin's right thigh was sighted. All the while, Rupert and Daniel were jumping and down at the back of the stage and everyone was screaming, so I really had to focus to just stare HARD at Colin, who, luckily, was standing still.
Colin has a really slim frame, you can see from his small ankles. His legs were muscular but obviously skinny, and on his inner left thigh, there were big prominent veins running down the whole thigh down his legs to his calves- was it from the strain of holding himself there? Baggy white Y-fronts, check. Ben didnt hump Colin that ...er.. closely... so those Y-fronts were in full sight all the while. This scene lasted at most a couple of frantic minutes, so that's about all I could absorb.
In a later scene, Colin wears just a singlet, and he is indeed pasty Irish boy, very white, even compared to Tom and Ben (who both appear shirtless at points and both have very find chests and backs, ahem). Colin's arms are long and lean and also muscled, with veins running down from where the arms join the shoulders. Darn, I forgot to look at his collar bones ! Next time!
The death scene, for all that I was expecting it, was so sudden that I jumped too when the shot was fired. Baby gave no warning or preamble, then it was -splat!- blood, then Colin recoils. It was heartbreaking , all the characters, Skinny himself included, didn't expect Skinny to die. They rushed to get a towel, get him a chair to sit down, but Colin quite quickly degenerated into lying on the floor, and making the most gruesome gurgling sounds. skinny articulates a little of what he feels " my teeth are shaky" " how much blood do I have to lose before I die?", then before you know it, it's over. A word here- if you sit in the first couple of rows, you might not be able to see Colin when he's flat on the floor. I averted by eyes for his"dying face", but the sounds themselves were pretty moving already.
Stage door:
i went on Monday 2 dec night, and the stage door was the most civilized thing ever. The play ended at 10:05 and the actors were out and signing from 10:15 onwards, and by 10:30, security announced that no one else was coming out. Because do the wide frontage set up, the waiting crowd was only 2 people deep- a far cry from the scrum I saw at Tempest! Everyone was quiet respectful, only increase from murmur was when Rupert came out. It was apparently Bredan's birthday so some fans wished him. I was next to some guys who passed Brendon a take out receipt to sign, LOL and they all joked with him about in :)
I count myself lucky that Rupert, Tom, Daniel and Brendan all came out. I didn't want signatures and left that to Amph, while I focused on taking photos- quite challenging on the light and also as they were looking down most do the time. Sadly, Colin didnt come out but I might try again. I didn't feel like loitering around that night, who knows if I had he might have come out later.
And... That's it? \o/
