So - on my way home this morning I had to brake pretty hard to avoid these little critters...

What are they?

I'm not sure - I thought grouse at first, but they're not I don't think... any ideas?

That is a lot of birds to see at once. Crows and rooks are some of the smartest birds I have seen, when they are feasting on roadkill they know which side of the road a car is approaching on and whether they need to move or not.
