The Statue of Liberty holds a torch as a beacon. It's light is (i think) supposed to symbolize enlightenment. I wonder, though, could a lantern not symbolize these things as well as a torch? Wouldn't a lantern, it's flame sheltered from the elements, imply more stability than a torch? A lantern never makes me think of lynch-mobs or razing ( Read more... )
