08. I wanna ask you -
Do you ever sit and wonder,
It's so strange
That we could be together for
So long, and never know, never care
What goes on in the other one's head?
[‘You Don’t Know Me’ - Ben Folds (feat. Regina Spektor)]
Tyra couldn’t believe she was actually driving back to Dillon. Voluntarily, and at both Matt Saracen’s, and Jason Street’s request no less. She was still irked by Jason’s continual teasing about liking Matt. The guy was sweet, that’s all there was to it. It wasn’t like she’d been talking about how hot he was, or how much she wanted to take the former number 7 of the Dillon Panthers for a tumble.
Saracen had every right to despise her for what she did to Landry, so she’d been surprised he’d even talked to her. But the guy was sweet; there really was no denying it. And he’d always had that lopsided smile and-
Tyra cranked up the music a little louder and tried to drown out that particular line of thinking as she came into Dillon. She was coming here to eat pizza and catch up with friends and family. The few friends she still had were easy enough given that they were all at Street’s. She’d find Julie Taylor tomorrow and see how she was doing. Might even spend some time with Mrs T.
As she pulled up in front of Jason’s new place, she realised that while she had been itching to get out of the small town since she’d hit puberty, she had never banked on the fact that she’d miss the people. When she’d been with Tim, it was strange that she’d never considered the fact that she’d be leaving him behind. Guess it was a sign of things to come. She knew they’d been on borrowed time.
Tyra let out a heavy sigh as she opened her door, and jumped out of her truck. Yeah, so maybe Tyra Collette had finally grown a heart. She was actually attached to people... who knew?
Some of Tyra’s new found sentimentality had to be why she found herself sitting on the front step of the Street/MacKenzie/Riggins/Jameson abode. She hadn’t really stopped smiling since she’d entered the place, finding it surprisingly easy to keep the conversation flowing, even with Tim and his new girlfriend. She’d never had a problem with Sam, but she was sure Sam had had a problem or two with her. That was okay, Tyra understood. It was nice that the other blonde could manage to have a laugh with her now.
She nursed a soda as she listened to Saracen’s slightly stammering drawl. She was trying to remember another time when they’d sat and talked for so long, but she was drawing a blank. The couples inside seemed to have been getting a little amorous, so she and Matt had slipped out without notice. She laughed at something he said, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear.
It happened without Tyra noticing, and she still couldn’t have explained the change of events. Hindsight was not quite twenty-twenty in this case. She just remembered suddenly realising that Matt’s lips were pressed against hers and they were sharing a pretty nice kiss. She had no idea who had made the first move, but she did remember cupping his face with her hand and deepening the kiss. It had felt like an age since anyone had kissed her with no ulterior motive, and without it being rushed in anticipation of clothes coming off. Not since Landry... And comparing Matt and Landry was something Tyra didn’t want to do.
The kiss eased to an end, and what should have come next was a pleasant afterglow, or a continuation of the intimacy. Instead Tyra looked at Matt, and frowned in confusion. She wasn’t supposed to have liked that, or him. She opened her mouth to say something, but dropped her soda bottle instead and made a quick beeline for her truck.
That really shouldn’t have happened. She didn’t want Saracen’s ass. She shouldn’t want Saracen’s ass. He was Julie’s ex, and Landry’s best friend.
Tyra sure did know how to pick ‘em.
