Actually. I think the Mme. Giry in the beginning of the movie -was- Meg. If you think about it, it makes more sense. The phantom is supposed to be a lot older than they portrayed him in the film, and despite the fact that he was still alive to leave the rose at Christine's grave, he was probably much older than the Mme. Giry at the auction. Plus, look at the age relation between her and Raoul. Trust me, it just makes more sense that way.
And the other bit about "keep your hand at the level of your eyes"...did you see the thing that Kevin McNally did when Mme. Giry did that song? The phantom had a penchant for using rope, as I'm sure you saw in the movie. Having your hand in place there prevents it from being pulled too tightly and thus choking his intended victim. Of course...they both eventually forgot. And...I'll shut up now. I've obviously given this too much thought.
But by that same token, why would Mme. Giry, her mother, be interested in it either? She didn't know about it. Meg was the one to see it, if only briefly when she picked up the Phantom's mask at the end of the film after he 'disappeared'.
We don't know that Madame Giry didnt know about the music box, I mean she was close friends with the phantom. And she saw his monke doll with the cymbals. Also Madame Giry knew where he lived so perhaps she has visited his lair.
