Character

Name: Rainbow Dash
Fandom: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Gender: Female
Age: No exact age in canon. I'm going with young adult because she lives on her own and has a job.
Time Period: After the Grand Galloping Gala
Wing Color: Sky blue, like her regular wings
History: http://mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Rainbow_Dash
Personality: The first thing that sticks out about Rainbow Dash is her strong self-confidence. This is a pony who thinks she is the coolest thing on four legs and isn't afraid of letting people know about it. In her mind, she's the greatest flier-- no, greatest athlete in all of Equestria, and she's not afraid of showing her stuff. Whether it's doing crazy stunts to impress the Wonderbolts or challenging Applejack to an Iron Pony competition, one thing's pretty clear: Rainbow Dash likes to be on top. In fact, she even admitted that she hates losing. After the whole mess at the Running of the Leaves, she's probably gotten a little better, but they do say bad habits die hard.

She's a bit brash and might come across as a bit of a jerk sometimes with her blunt remarks and occasionally short temper. Just look at the way she poked fun at Twilight Sparkle for being an "egg head," or her anger when Fluttershy couldn't even do a good cheer. Still, while a little rough around the edges, Rainbow is definitely a good friend. She'll stick up for 'em when the going gets tough, whether it's saving Rarity from a plunge to certain doom or turning down a chance to join the "Shadow Bolts" as their new captain. There's a reason she represents the Element of Loyalty.

Rainbow also possesses a love of sports, excitement, and practical jokes. In Call of the Cutie, it's revealed that she knows how to hang glide, do karate, skate in a roller derby, and all sorts of cool stuff. She spends a lot of her time performing crazy stunts to impress her idols, the Wonderbolts, at least when she's not lazing around.

And speaking of the Wonderbolts, they've had a pretty big influence on Rainbow Dash. Throughout the series, she talks about her dream of joining their team and performing all sorts of crazy stunts with them. The fame, the thrills, it's by far her biggest dream. Just the chance to meet them filled her with excitement after she won the Best Young Fliers competition, and though she didn't get to spend much time with them during the Grand Galloping Gala, it's highly doubtful that she'll be ditching the dream any time soon.

When it comes to crazy pranks, Rainbow Dash will mess around with just about anypony-- except Fluttershy, since she's so sensitive. She totally rigged Gilda's welcome party for a good laugh, and she and Pinkie Pie had a real field day with their friends in Ponyville. Invisible ink, spooking Spike into getting the hiccups, sneezing powder... They're all a bit silly and might come across as annoying to some folks, but it's important to note that she typically doesn't do it for malicious reasons. It's really all for a good laugh. Compare this to Gilda, an old friend of hers, who picked on the ponies in Ponyville, including the timid Fluttershy.

Needless to say, when Rainbow Dash saw this side of Gilda, she was hardly impressed, and this proves that even Dash has standards. There are limits to everything, even mischief.

In short, she's a confident (if not cocky), thrill seeking, and loyal pony. Definitely not the sparkles and sunshine you'd expect from a My Little Pony character.

Strengths:

Physical;

You couldn't ask for a speedier pony. Rainbow Dash totally defies the laws of physics with her eye-catching stunts. Loop de loops, spinning clouds around, making a mini tornado in the first episode just to clean Twilight up a bit... Oh, and she's the only known pegasus to create a Sonic Rainboom, which is a combination of a rainbow and a sonic boom. Needless to say, her speed and skill are her greatest assets as an athlete. Most of that skill comes from her wings, but even with her wings tied down she was able to run a good race with Applejack... at least until they both started cheating.

Aside from her speed, she's generally good at sports. Dash nearly broke a record of bouncing a ball without stopping, and if it weren't for Pinkie Pie's randomness, she probably would've succeeded. She's skilled with arm (leg?) wrestling, bronco bucking, and countless other activities. Overall, she outmatches just about all the ponies in town, with the exception of Applejack, her friend and athletic rival.

Along with her insane speed, Rainbow is capable of standing on clouds, shifting them around, making it rain and snow... Essentially, if there are clouds in the sky, she's in the zone. Back in Equestria, it was part of her job to handle weather control. I don't expect her to be capable of manipulating them quite as freely in Luceti, but I can see her at least being able to chill up in some of the low hanging clouds and maybe make a tiny downpour over a small area.

It should also be noted that she's pretty darn dextrous for a horse. She and the other ponies of Ponyville can use their front limbs just like arms, picking up and manipulating objects with relative ease. When the hooves won't work, her mouth gets the job done. In short, she may be a quadruped, but she fits right into civilization without having to hang out in a barn or at a ranch.

And seeing how she's a cartoon pony, she's pretty durable. Slamming into a wall at a high speed would normally break someone's bones, but that wasn't a problem when Dash got "cursed" by the poison joke plant in Bridle Gossip. She's also been rocketed off of a see-saw so fast she made a little twinkle in the sky, been knocked around by a dragon. This isn't to say she's invincible, because, really, she's not. She'll still bleed if she's cut, and if she's under enough pressure, her bones will probably snap. Twilight Sparkle had casts briefly in one episode, so it's definitely possible.

She's just cartoonish enough to handle more than ordinary horses. Go figure!

Mental/Emotional;

Rainbow Dash's confidence can either be seen as a strength or a fault. On the positive side, though, she isn't the mopey sort of pony and is generally pretty outgoing. She doesn't shy away from a challenge, instead going in at full force, ready to tackle danger head-on. She's brave and strong-willed, and maybe a little bit reckless. But is that always such a bad thing? Her cool 'tude might even be seen as admirable to some; it's definitely earned her a little filly fan in the form of Scootaloo.

Like I mentioned above, Rainbow Dash is incredibly loyal. While she may get irritated with her friends from time to time, she's stuck by them through thick and thin. Even when Rarity nearly stole the show at the Best Young Fliers competition, they remained on good terms. Likewise, she and Applejack are good pals, even if they do butt heads once in a while when it comes to sports and the like. In a dangerous situation, you can bet that she'd be there to stick up for her friends and put up a good fight. After all, she did earn her cutie mark when she raced to defend Fluttershy's honor.

Underneath her rough exterior, she's generally pretty friendly, too. Sure she'll crack a joke, pull a prank, and sometimes say something rude or blunt, but she generally means no ill will. Sometimes she's even pretty helpful, like the time she tried to help Applebloom earn her a cutie mark. Later on, she even told the Cutie Mark Crusaders just how she got hers in the first place. Dash probably wouldn't go around looking for people to help, but she'll still lend a hoof every once in a while.

Lastly, while Rainbow Dash isn't one for books and logic, she makes up for it in street smarts and cleverness. Given her job of weather control, Dash knows her stuff about the sky, and if you asked her for a tour of Cloudsdaile, she'd know just about every little location. Obviously, she won't know the way around Luceti at first, but I'm sure that, with time, she'll figure things out.

Weaknesses:

Physical;

While Rainbow is certainly fast, she tends to rely heavily on her wings. If anything happened to them, she'd be in a rough spot. Sure, she can get around on the ground just fine, and she still manages to sprint at high speeds, but in many ways her wings are what give her that added edge. Plus, wings are sensitive. If Rainbow Dash has any physical weak spots, her wings would definitely be the place.

Plus, she's small and lean. Cartoon pony or not, a big, hulking foe can still send her flying-- and not the way she likes it. Plus, it probably wouldn't be too hard to snap her bones, and since she doesn't wear any armor for protection, a jab with a bladed weapon or a shot from a gun would absolutely hurt her.

Rainbow Dash might be good with tricks, speed, and maybe a little fighting, but she's not an RPG hero. She doesn't wield a giant sword, carry a gun, or fight evil 24/7. While she's got strong legs and could probably shake some lightning down from the clouds, she doesn't know any magic or carry a weapon. In a serious battle, she'd be in trouble, and it wouldn't take much to take her down.

In short, while her skills are great, so are her weaknesses.

Mental/Emotional;

I started with confidence before, let's talk about it here. To most people (or ponies), Rainbow Dash's self assurance probably comes off as pretty darn arrogant. She's so full of herself at times that it might even be grating. Plus, in a competition, Rainbow Dash's first priority is to win, and she's not afraid of taking a few shortcuts to get there. It's how she came out on top in the Iron Pony competition; those wings of hers gave her the unfair advantage over Applejack, hands down.

And because she's so into winning, she's an enormous sore loser. She wants to succeed, no matter what it takes. Beat her at her own game, and she'll act like a total grouch about it. Maybe even deny her loss. Heck, in Sonic Rainboom, she got so worried about failure that she had a panic attack.

Plus, she's stubborn, impatient, and absolutely impulsive. When danger strikes, she's the type of pony to charge into the fray regardless of risks. It's why her friends usually have to hold her back. Otherwise, she could end up in over her head; it certainly wouldn't take much.

One last thing to note is that Rainbow Dash has a bit of a lazy side. In the first episode, she was slacking off with her cloud clearing duties just to perform tricks and laze around a bit. She's still very active, but Dash isn't particularly above procrastination, either. This can be a bit off putting, if not annoying from time to time.

Samples

First Person: Okay, so I guess I'm supposed to talk into this thing, right? Geez, whoever heard of a talking book? I've seen a lot of strange stuff in Ponyville, but nothing like this.

[There's a pause, followed by a sigh.]

Anyway, what's the deal with this place? Everything's just like the Everfree Forest, only worse! Clouds moving on their own, animals caring for themselves, and where the heck are all the ponies? Everybody here looks like a bunch of tall, bald monkeys. But I guess you're called "hue-muns"?

It just doesn't add up. Plus, what am I supposed to do with these extra wings?

Third Person:

Something wasn't right. At first she thought she might've woke up in the Everfree Forest. And, hey, maybe those extra wings were just another prank from Poison Joke. It's not like that hadn't happened before. But why did they hurt so much? And how the heck did she get out there in the first place? Unless somepony dragged her out in her sleep, Rainbow Dash couldn't think of one good reason for her to be out in the woods.

So, in spite of the awkwardness of the added wings, she quickly took to the air, flying higher and higher until she could get a good look around. Once she reached her vintage point, she gasped; nothing looked even remotely familiar. Sure, there was a little village down below, but it definitely wasn't Ponyville. Even though the lakes, rivers, and mountains looked almost familiar, it just wasn't home.

Flying as fast as she could, Rainbow Dash scoured the area, keeping her eyes peeled for her friends or anypony remotely familiar. No luck.

No matter where she went, she couldn't see anypony anywhere. It just didn't make sense. It wasn't logical... and logic usually wasn't her thing to begin with! Groaning, she decided to go higher and higher in hopes of spotting Ponyville at a distance- or at least Cloudsdaile. How hard could it be? All she had to do was keep going and going and-- CLONK!

The moment she collided with the barrier, Rainbow Dash rocketed down at blistering speeds, blazing through the forest trees. It wasn't until she neared the ground that she managed to slow down just enough to land with only a quiet thud. That... definitely didn't go as planned. The skies of Equestria weren't supposed to have random... barriers to slow her down!

She rolled her eyes and slowly stood back up, shaking off a few broken branches before she took another look around. It was then that she finally spotted the random journal lying on the ground. A journal that, for whatever reason, had her name on it.

A book, at a time like this? Very funny.
