I always thought is was horrible the way women in the work force were basically thrown away and encouraged to cook meals that took half the day - just because men returned from war. I'm not saying we shouldn't have supported our veterans, because we need to do that, but we needed to show better appreciation for women in the workforce.

Oh gods yes, the way women & minority & differently-abled workers were kicked to the curb in favor of returning men, especially white men, was maddening. At the same time veteran women were barely supported either--they were basically regarded as civilian substitutes for men who happened to wear uniforms. Many women did want to quit working for wages, especially those who had/wanted kids, but a substantial percentage would've gladly continued or trained for comparable jobs.

I don't begin to know how both the existing workers & returning veterans could have been accomodated in a peacetime economy. The way it was done was a sin & a shame, tho'....
