There was a Howard Johnson's restaurant in Asbury Park until about 10 years ago. Last I chr, the building was still there, and there is still a restaurant there, but it doesn't carry the Howard Johnson's name any more. It still appears the same, though - somewhere halfway between fast food and diner.

I know the place you mean, McLoone's. I'm not sure I'd describe the food that way, though; it is pretty fancy/expensive. They have a "supper club" upstairs with live music.

On the flip, I went into a place off the Merritt Parkway in Hamden, Ct., and - although the outside had been tweaked to look like the adjacent hotel - as soon as I walked inside I was like "this was a HoJo's" and their food is pretty much what I remember HoJo's serving. There's a place in Claymont, De., that - as of my last visit - was the same way.
