I think I would still exchange on the many-vowelled rack. Just not convinced.
ACEIQTZ seems like a tough call. The thing is, while the Q can still score next turn, I don't think it is good enough to keep. I still have plays like ZETA, and maybe I will draw something bigger as well.
I think CARTEL makes some sense. I can definitely draw some good options with the Z afterwards, even though I didn't know CARTELIZE. ZA seems like too timid a play, not accomplishing enough.
In the case of MELT, I don't think the shots at the Ys are bad at all, because (MELT)Y could be a really helpful play to have. While CLRY probably won't yield a large play there, the L probably will, and then I can hope to get a good Y play next turn. I'm less sure about CLATTER, as it does open her some other good scoring options. If I draw the other E I could be in good shape, but I think playing MELT tends to make this play a good deal more difficult for her, even if it wasn't this time.
Your general analysis seems good--I was playing too timidly in this game.
