“It was stolen,” I said, as if talking about any everyday topic.

“What?” she replied in horror, “why didn’t you tell us, we could’ve gotten insurance?!”

“Because it didn’t really matter to me.”

I know where you're coming from. I find myself at times trying too hard to make people happy by telling white lies. Some years ago I realized that I was telling them all the time to make my decisions easier...I find that the more I tell the truth the happier it makes me.

If I were your parent, this might be a wake up call that next time they want to buy you something which you won't care about anyway, they should donate the money to charity in your name. They should know you well enough to interpret your lack of enthusiasm.

It drives me crazy when I buy someone a present & they treat it with utter disregard. Like when I bought a bf a wooden ashtray in Malaysia, & he threw it in the dishwater thereby ruining the wood.

I remember moments like this with my parents, who never seemed to want me to grow up and live independently of them. In fact, they would seemingly give me gifts *so that* they could resent me for imposing on them ( ... )
