Dyke on Dike Action

So Iowa City is flooded. It's been a low-grade adventure for me so far, but some people are having to live in their friends' basements for awhile, and some are at the shelters. My friend SuSu Kitty works at the county animal shelter, which is flooded out. She's having to pull 16 hour shifts at the fairgrounds with the puppies, kitties, etc. What ( Read more... )

Glad to hear you're doing well!

I'm going to come in from Chicago (where I live now) the weekend of July 12 with some friends and we're going to spend the weekend doing flood-related volunteer stuff. Do you have any suggestions for how we can help?

We're mostly dry now, but there may be some clean-up efforts you can assist with. The animal shelter got completely trashed, and is covered in stinky slime. There are also a lot of sandbags that need to be taken away. I don't know of anything specific, but if you watch the Press Citizen in the days before you arrive, you might find a project you can help with.
