Deathy... Deathy doesn't see the point of High Elves. There's that whole "oops we accidentally blew up the world thing that the Night Elves are not going to forgive them for because they were still AROUND from that time frame.
And unfortunately, unlike what one of the posters claimed, they do not have infinite patience and forgiveness. Maiev is a perfect example of the exact opposite.
Threw my two pennies into the jar in the thread. This person seems to have a misconception of what night elves are actually like because hurr game mechanics they hang out with everyone just fine.
"there is a small population of players who consider themselves knowledgeable in Warcraft lore, and yet they are the first and usually the only ones to call out people who play characters as high elves"
I, actually, have nothing against High Elf characters on the Alliance side. I have rules* for them, but nothing against them.
If they play the character well, remember the conflict and stigma they carry around with them, remember that they are a broken and addicted people and that not everyone on the Alliance is going to be hunky-dory with them chilling around, then I'm happy. IC conflict of the appropriate kind (Political, racial, moral etc) is a good thing in RP, and High Elves CAN bring it. Most of them DON'T, but they CAN.
*Rules -Use a human model -Play classes associated with High Elves, IE; Mage, Warrior, Priest -Stick to the hubs where they are most welcome, IE; Dalaran, Stormwind, Theramore -Don't be/pretend to be ignorant to the tensions within the faction
