early settlers

this past blizzard, current bitter cold and stress of the season has left me with the worst fibromyalgic flare up in 2 years. i basically have to sleep it off and keep really warm. my fibro has eased up in the last 8 months, which made me forget i had it. then i get whomped. this is another reason why i want to live in a more forgiving climate ( Read more... )

I know that my ancestors who came over from Belgium settled in MN for the farmland when it was NOT winter and were like, "Wow, the climate here is just like Belgium!" Then winter came . . . a rude awakening. Actually, many of them were going to high-tail it back to Belgium but were stopped by a blizzard when they were set to leave! So it's probably safe to say I wouldn't exist without this crazy MN weather. :p

As for how earlier settlers kept warm, I often wonder this myself. I can't imagine living in a home without a heater at this time of year!
