I'm sitting here in the Atlanta airport.  As I came up the escalator into my terminal to make my connection I noticed a pair of military men (actually a man and a woman) sitting on the floor on their computers plugged in to power in the wall.  i walked past them for a few steps and then backtracked and invited them into the Delta Crown Room club ( Read more... )

Your feeling conflicted about helping somebody doesn't mean you did the wrong thing. It might mean you did the right thing even though you felt conflicted about it. You can disapprove of the war and still have sympathy for someone who is stuck with having to fight in it.

A few years ago I had a friend and co-worker ask me for a recommendation to get into the Air Force Academy, at a time when it was becoming pretty apparent that Bush was going to take us into a senseless and unjustified war in Iraq. It took a lot of soul searching but I did write the recommendation, and it was a glowing one. Eventually it came down to this: as much as I disagreed with the war, I realized I could not in good conscience dictate someone else's life choices. If I want to be able to live as I choose, I have to wish for others to have the same ability. I also realize that some good can come from a conscientious individual even if that individual is working toward a cause which, overall, is evil.
