I think I've managed to coin (or co-opt from shared mindspace) a new term that actually has some merit.

psy-chlo-tron (SI-klo-tron) noun, deriv. "cyclotron": That spinning, roiling space behind the eyes in multi-tasking types where cogitation on a given subject or subjects never truly ceases, but is no longer an immediate topic. Often with new ( Read more... )

there's a technique (which I cannot come up with the name right now, of course) that is taught to students for test taking that is exactly what you're describing- put it into the psychlotron, move on to the next question, then come back to the original question when the answer comes to you. I've found that my psychlotron goes off in the middle of the night.
