Threatening you with false information in order to get you to pay a debt is illegal. Talk to your roommate, Jim. He used to work collections.
Also, if someone is rude to you on a collections call, you can ask to speak to their supervisor and report the mistreatment to them. It goes on the rep's record, not yours. If the rep won't put you through to a supervisor (which they are required to do if you ask for one), then get the rep's name and employee ID (*if they'll give it again), ask if you can call them back and call back and ask the next rep you talk to for a supervisor.
