extra credit: neither side in Cyria likes the US and is likely to be grateful for 'help' in the conflict. The Government has clearly used Weapons of Mass Destruction(tm); Sarin VS civilians. US foriegn policy more or less states that if anybody does that; the USA Empire gets it's knickers bunched and nukes you. Yeah; that's gonna happen.
I think I might argue on the "government has clearly used WMD" statement. If you look around there's a number of indications that the chemical attack may have been done by rebels (or perhaps rebel affiliated forces, like the ones that were trained in Jordan and went over the border last week). Assad may be a horrible person, but I doubt that he's stupid enough to want to invite cruise missiles coming down around his head while fighting a civil war. The rebels have far more to gain dragging US and allies into the conflict then Assad does. The *only* reason I can see Assad doing it (and I don't rule out the possibility) is either EXTREME hubris, or an ally offering support and wanting the US to get embroiled. (Maybe Russia offering Assad and family safe passage out? Iran offering to sink freighters and shoot the price of oil up?)
