The last time I used this thing was over a year ago.

Well, hello there.  I've had my ups and downs since I graduated exactly two years ago.

In that time frame, I have
  • left a career path (I don't want to be an actuary),
  • switched to a new job (Epic!),
  • moved cities (from Chicago to Madison...eh...I'm not happy about this),

I agree with SO MUCH of what you say - except that with some of the 'dead ends': quite often paths that are viable when you start out become dead ends several years in (for example, I passed all the actuarial exams through C on my first try but when I tried to actually *go* that route? They didn't want me because I hadn't done the right internships ten years earlier when I was on the pure math track!)

Good luck with your plans! However, I take it there are A LOT fewer people competing for statistics academic positions than math positions? In pure math, merely getting into a top-ten (or even top-five) school for a PhD doesn't even guarantee you the first one year postdoc anymore!
