I am still so bummed I never made it to Onetribe. I ran into Jared (the guy who founded it, I believe) at a suspension event yeeears ago when he said "nice earrings" to me and I realized that his nametag said "Jared - Onetribe" and I was wearing their jewelry. He was super-nice. They didn't open the studio until last spring, I think; there was an opening party that I was seriously considering driving up for, but it was right in the middle of frantic planning and those few months of seemingly non-stop travel and it didn't work out. I'm hoping I can make it up there next time I'm in NC, although that's kind of a crazy plan.
Richmond is not actually that rough a drive if you're here and you feel like a day trip sometime. From Chapel Hill to there is just a bit over two hours. We took off in the very late morning, went up there, did lots of puttering around, and still got home before dinnertime.
It's definitely a neat place to visit. Their workshop adjoins the showroom and it's more or less all open - it seemed like it would be impolite to stand around staring too long, so I didn't, but all the machinery and such that they use is all right there to see.
South across the river near the industrial zones is near where I was scanning a murder scene at 2am in 100 degree weather. Probably not quite where you were, though.
On a different topic entirely, it's amazing how great the stuff that's normally considered lowest-common-denominator American food can be when it's actually made with real ingredients.
