I wrote the following in response to a description of a cut scene in RE5.  The following is cut because I know some people (myself among them) have to be in the right frame of mind to read things that might upset them.  My comment on racism in RE5 and a link to the relevant post in Read more... )

The game has three protagonists killing black people and two of them are black.

Barely even 50% of the zombies are even black people. There's loads of white people and indian people and so on.

At one point Chris and Sheva glimpse a woman struggling with a group of Majini (the Africans infected with the Los Plagas virus) on a balcony overlooking a street.

She's grabbed by ONE guy and he's WHITE.

That's interesting, I wonder what's going on. Do you know if the cut scenes are pre-done or procedurally generated? I wonder if it literally randomly picks a zombie model to use in that scene. Or if that scene was 'censored' in some way for australian release.

Also I thought the other two characters were 'sidekicks' and not playable characters.

I myself have only seen the demo when Chris was playing it. As I said I didn't see too much wrong with it. If you set a zombie game in africa most of the zombies are going to be african. However, if it sets up white characters to be more powerful, intelligent, pure etc than most of the black characters then it's crossing the line for me.

Most of the scenes people are furious about appear to have been surreptitiously edited by Capcom between the preview copy and the final game.

It'd be nice if Capcom got called on the shit they've left in the game anyway (alternate outfits = hoo boy), just because they could do with the reality check.

The biggest problem is that from an actual background point of view (namely, the fact that the biological element of Biohazard is being used as a terrorist tool and being made available on the black market) there's really few places to put it in. And yes, the black market in Africa is notoriously known ( ... )

They could make a game where Ada, Carlos and HUNK team up to fight crime.

That'd be fucking awesome

I have the feeling that they'll do that in a later RE. I mean, they even have you play as Wesker and Carlos in RE Umbrella Chronicles. It's B grade horror, remember? If the story works, it'll work.

But the point is that there's a lot of context involved before you point out Racism in anything. It's not unheard of, or even unlikely that what was portrayed in RE5 could play out in quite a few places in Africa. The biological parts included, and THAT should scare you more than the fact that it's shown as fiction.
