I had the "pleasure" of subbing at a charter elementary school in Bushwick yesterday. I use quotes not because the school itself is unpleasant (although the unusually-long teaching day in relation to the measly per-diem pay is the reason I'm not going back again), but because of, of course, the Transit Workers Union strike. I can only wonder how those magnet schools are doing in a position like this. I can see some of these kids taking the PATH along the long route just to walk a couple more blocks just to hit Battery Park so they can go to Stuyvesant. And I still wish I kept my phone cam last night. Like I said in a previous entry, I thought there was a bomb scare down there.
