Also, that story that they cite on your link about John Travolta and Welcome Back Kotter - I swear I remember reading that the fact that Travolta couldn't do the Gere role b/c of TV was what drove Malick away from directing for decades, but I can't remember where - have you ever heard that?

Not until that review, no, but I try to stay away from hoo-haw re: malick's debilitating self-devouring persona. Frankly, the less I know about this guy, the better, and that seems to be his own party line for the last 30 years. The extras on the criterion dvd almost seem preposterous to me, but damn, that's one nice image-I-should-probably-get-a-job-at-an-electronics-store-for-just-to-test-out-the-damned-thing-before-I-die kind of thing.

And for the record, barney miller was always superior to kotter, but maybe terence is partial to his print of fast break?

I've been waiting for a legitimate DVD of this for so long. The one I own literally looks like it was taped off of TV.
