And now, Virginia has elected a Democrat for Governor. Haven't they been a strict Republican state for like, 40 years?

The outgoing governor was a Democrat, too.

Still a huge victory, though, given the enormous amount of money and support behind Jerry Kilgore.

On the national front, VA has been consistently Republican for a while. However, local Democratic organizations in these red states tend to be more conservative than the national party and sometimes still field competitive candidates.

VA also has a lot of liberal government workers in residence which can negate the conservative rural areas at times.

They like to think they are hard cord republican. They are when it comes to presidental elections, but there is a strange breed of "Virginia Democrat." For 20 of the last 28 years--they have had a Democrat governor. But they tend to be moderate to conservative Democrats, a couple of them have been pro-life as well.

The more interesting thing from this election, was not that Kaine won, but rather that Kaine picked up significant percentages of the vote in conservative stronghold districts. That is a trend that might be worth watching. But then again Kaine could just be an abberation. Still lots of reason to be happy about the Democratic party this post-election eve.

I specifically enjoy the PA school board getting ousted. That was quite redeeming. I guess even the republicans want something resembling common sense being taught in schools.
