I'm pretty sure Ruby was well aware of that long before Sam knew actually. I don't believe a whole lot of what she says, or rather I think she may be telling the truth sometimes, but only parts of it, to lead Sam on. She would have nothing to gain by telling Sam this of course, in fact it might even turn him away from her or certainly focus his goals somewhere else, other than where Ruby wants them. So no, I don't think Sam told Ruby. Ruby has her own agenda I think and not for a minute do I believe that Lilith let her go: because really, Ruby has done nothing but try to get Sam stronger to use his powers and Lilith would be aware of that, if only because Alistair would have told her. I think it is Sam who is being betrayed here, not Dean.

I believe this as well, especially after her smirking as Sam was drinking her blood.

I'm thinking that she's betraying both the boys, she's behind a lot of the drama between them. I'm thinking that by betraying Sam that she is also betraying Dean. Dean doesn't like people or anything else for that matter messing with his baby brother.
This would mean that Sam betrayed Dean's confidence by telling Ruby
Not necessarily. There are a lot of ways Ruby could know. We've been told before that demons read minds. She's been around the boys enough to have picked it up from Dean. And if she's working for Lilith, which is looking more and more likely to me, then she'd know anyway.
I truly believe that if Ruby had known from the moment she came back into Sam's life she would have said something after the angels brought Dean back.
But...she couldn't have known when she came back into Sam's life because Dean hadn't broken then. What she knew at that time was what Sam already knew: that Dean was being tortured in Hell.
While I don't think that this Azazel's end game I do believe that it is Lilith's.I thought Lilith was following a different plan from Azazel right up until this ep. She wanted Sam dead: that didn't seem to fit with the idea that she and the YED had the same endgame. But Alastair talked about breaking the seals as a "religious" thing and that was Azazel's MO
( ... )
I thought John already had clawed his way out of hell as shown in AHBL 2?
Yes, but that was a full year after he died and went to Hell. Dean died a further year after that and, we are told, broke in three months. That's 27 months, earth time and 270 years, Hell-time. So, if Castiel is to be believed, it took the angels nearly three centuries to figure out what was going on, lay seige to Hell and arrive just too late to save Dean from breaking. Either they were asleep on the job, or Castiel's a lying bastard. Me, I'm going with the latter.
Because if John was supposed to be the one who would break (whether he did or didn't break), the angels had a full year to save him and didn't even try. It makes more logical sense that they had no freaking clue what was going on until the seal broke - and then they needed to save Dean because now only he can stop it, according to their prophecy.
Maybe John wasn't the "righteous" man as told in the prophecy? Which made Alastair to be the liar, and we do know that demons lie. And maybe breaking into hell wasn't, uhm, easy?
I don't know, really, these are just my own thoughts. I could very well be wrong!
I think when Alastair was talking about that 'poor bitch' that was Dean's first torture...maybe it was Ruby all along. Maybe she's looking for payback now and that's why she's screwing with Sam.
But you're right...she shouldn't have known...I don't think Sam would have told her. Of course, she also shouldn't have known how to hide from angels or how to find angels (since she claimed when Sam first told her about Castiel that she'd never seen one and didn't know anything that could pull Dean out of the pit) She's a lying bitch. LYING LYING BITCH!!!

And IMHO, the angels needed to save Dean before the seal was broken ie before Dean broke. Prevention, you know.
Just my two cents worth.
