"No way," Came the reply, immediate and asserted, "If I do that, I'll have to keep going back again, and then we'd never be done!"

Of course, this assertion, as anyone could see, was deeply out of place among the midst of wobbling, brittle dishes that constantly threatened to topple over. Truth be told; Luffy did not enjoy washing dishes. Not only did it take forever to shake and rinse the soap water off his rubbery hand, but those much-too-fragile dishes would often earn him a smack on the head and an extension of debt from Nami. He wanted to get things done, and fast --because there was a whole island of untouched caves and creatures awaiting him just outside.

Usopp groaned, quickly looking away from the unsteady stack of dishes in Luffy's arms, as if not actually seeing them tip over would stop them from crashing to the floor in a shattered mess. It was always possible they might make it to the sink unharmed; stranger things had happened, especially out on the Grand Line. Usopp set his more modest stack of plates into the sink and began running the hot water, dumping in a large amount of powered dish soap and watching it froth up in suds as he half-listened for the telltale crash that might or might not be coming from behind him.

For a moment, Luffy was careful. Moments like these were rare and, unfortunately, brief, usually happening in the interval between distraction and more distraction. As the mountain of dishes swayed above him, he instinctively learned their rhythm, and moved his feet to adapt nimbly. A wide grin formed on his lips as he savoured his little achievement, before that grin became a smirk; For Luffy, achievement only meant higher ambition.

He plopped his stack on one hand, not flinching at all from the sudden shift of weight as his raw strength more than made up for it, and threw his other arm across the galley to where another stack of dishes sat comfortably. His arm entwined around that stack, and once secure, retracted.

Little did Luffy know that a stack of dishes, when pulled across the room at considerable speed, would, naturally, not remain a stack any longer.

He'd already begun wiping some of the plates clean in the hot, soapy water, and was just rinsing them off when Usopp belatedly realized that not only had he not heard a crash, but that Luffy still hadn't arrived at the sink at all. Maybe he'd actually--shockingly--heeded Usopp's advice, or at least he must be proceeding with extreme care. That would explain why he wasn't here yet, and also why he hadn't smashed anything. Usopp couldn't help but let a self-satisfied smile creep onto his face--after all, it must have been his amazing advice that had convinced Luffy to be more careful. Flicking suds from his hands, he turned, intending to congratulate his captain on a job well done ( ... )
