update

Yeah, it's been a while, but I've been really busy adjusting to the new job which by the way is KICKING MY ASS, but in a great way. There is no time to goof off, like in previous jobs, and no time to blog, and when you already spend 8-9 hours a day writing at a computer, there isn't a lot of motivation to want to do that when you get home.

But, I love the new job. I have never been so busy and it's amazing how quickly the days go by when you actually have shit to do. There are 17 people in the company total (and two of them work offsite) and I like everyone there. Everyone is very smart and driven and *interesting*; even idle chitchat is educational and entertaining. No more inane natterings on about taking the kids to dance classes or swim meets or potty-training or whatever the fuck my previous cow-orkers would go on about. And no more coughing! (Actually, that's not entirely true; the guy in the next office is getting over a pretty bad sinus infection, but he swears he's not usually this expectorant ... even so, when you like the person who doing the coughing, strangely enough you don't want to kick them in the head until they stop).

I love being the only writer for a company that never had a writer before. They are so thrilled to have someone onboard whose job it is to do things with the documentation nobody else has had the time or skill set to do. Also, it's amazing how one's productivity sky-rockets when every word you write isn't ripped to shreds by a manager who seems to perpetually get up on the wrong side of the bed. I'd forgotten what a pleasure it is to go through an entire day without wanting to stab anyone in the eye with a ballpoint pen, and I'd forgotten how empowering it is to be able ask questions without fear you would be made to feel like an idiot for doing so. I'd forgotten how good it feels to be treated like a competent professional, and it feels pretty damn good.

I love working for a small, privately-owned company. Whatever you want, you can have, be it fancy staplers or an ergonomic desk chair or thousand-dollar software. On my third day there, the CEO took me to Staples to buy me whatever I needed. And new packages come in every day, full of cool things people need to do their jobs. (We don't have a foosball table, but there'd be nowhere to put it anyway.)

But, I miss my friends at the old job a lot. I miss everyone waving to me down the hall as they came in to work. I miss having that kind of rapport you can only enjoy with people whom you see every day for six years. And of course, I miss the easy commute. Driving 40 miles a day kind of sucks, but at least I get to do it in a convertible.

Also, I love wearing jeans to work every single day of the week.
