Our external hard drive died. We've only had it a little over a year ago and it had almost 250 gigs of stuff on it. I am so mad. All of my music, my digital pictures (1998-present) and a bunch of other random stuff was on there. Careful... If there's something physically wrong with a drive, you can actually damage it worse in the process of using these data recovery tools!

Real data recovery services, where they dissect the drive and put it back together, are coming down in cost but still kind of pricey. I've got a drive full of kidpics I still need to send in to a shop. It'll probably run about $1000... the cost of not keeping a backup :(
