The Northstar storyline in Astonishing X-Men works better if you have read the recent Alpha Flight miniseries (which was really quite good), because that had all the setup for the Jean-Claude/Kyle relationship tension. Which sort of puts the lie to my endorsement of Astonishing as "the X-men book to read if you don't want to get bogged down in continuity".
