Download Tweetie for the iphone, it's $0.99 but it rocks. If you don't want to pay, get Twitterrific.

Twitter will only send updates to your phone for people you mark as 'device update on', or direct messages, if you've elected to have them sent to your phone.

Personally, I have direct messages turned on (because people use them for phone to phone communication all the time) and the rest off, aside from a few special people.

Caveat: I work there. I love the service.

There is nothing more I can possibly add to this conversation. John is full of win in this realm.

Thanks, john! I think i had to pay $3 for the app, but who cares? It works very well.

Now I just need a way to have my phone sort between "event postings about things which are happening now" and "stupid status updates". I would like the former to send texts to my phone, and the latter to deliver small electric shocks to the poster. Can you guys make this happen?

I haven't figured out the device update thing, yet. Do you have to do that on the web, or can it be done through the app?
