Personally I think that having a second for all the primaries was absolutely fantastic excepting the boredom part. I really think one only having one or two secondaries would get trying for those couple of people as they tried to run all the necessary errands during each diplomacy phase. As such, I was brainstorming ways to get the secondaries involved more and came up with the idea of having them be the ones to -present- petitions. I figure all the primaries get the fun of arguing about petitions and voting, so it wouldn't detract much from their experience if the secondaries did the actual presenting of the item to vote on. This would also provide more engagement for the secondaries during the first phase as well, as primaries not in Audience could use that time to prep their secondary on the petition
( ... )
Next time, I'll come with a more prepared costume. :-P
The key thing I found with the seconds was that we didn't have a defined character to play. The example that was tossed around was the Doctor, who could revive the king or put him to sleep at will.
Of course, if that status got dumped instead of being traded, that character wouldn't have much to do.
The other thought I had was having the supporting character fulfilling other roles that might not be status granted. Bailiff, tax collector, brewer, etc.
One aspect that I started to enjoy more toward the end was that of spy. It was hard to do, since everyone "knew" I worked for one of the primaries, but perhaps if people's roles were less tied their primary, it would work out better.
I never got to be bribed, either, which was kinda disappointing, too.
