Not an ideal solution, but it might work until LJ fixes this: First, go into Profile, go to settings, go to Display, and click the box next to 'View all journals and communities in my own style'. Then go into your journal style, customize your theme. Go down to 'Disable customized comment pages for your journal' and set it to no.
Now... it'll put all comment pages in the same style as your journal. It's not ideal, but it gets rid of these new 'improvements'. That might get it so you can comment again.
Just found this on one of the Russian update bits:
"A note to users of RP, Meme and other communities, where subject line is crucial for operation: for the moment we are developing only standard commenting representation, well know in LiveJournal as S1 styles, but we will keep subject lines, both in terms of form and representation, in advanced - S2 - styles, and provide an ability to keep it forever for certain communities, as well as, by request, will develop an extra functionality for such communities thru OpensSocial applications going public next year."
Open Social is a programming API (by Google) for making site widgets. It's not necessarily a bad thing; the Google widgets that people use in GMail are OpenSocial. Not that I have any doubt that LJ will find a frustrating and stupid way to implement them, eventually.
