1. Awesome. I heart the news and NPR 2. People are crazy. Bigoted people are really crazy. 3. There's a reason these people come to America. A lot of my kids are here illegally, but they are working on becoming legal, which is possible so long as they're under 18. If I were in an impoverished country that kept getting hit by hurricanes and killing thousands, I might break the law without much remorse. . . particularly if it meant my children could have a future here. . . these parents aren't the most involved, but it's because they work 2-3 jobs just to be able to have a crappy house and feed their kids. There has to be something better than complete amnesty to everyone here illegally or deporting them to a country that no longer has a home for then and that they felt compelled to leave in the first place. 4. Outsourcing labor is necessary sometimes, but I do think we could keep the majority of it in-country. 5. USF or FIU :)
I agree with your point 3. I do feel bad for the kids. I go back and forth on this issue all the time. On one hand, I think people deserve the right to life by living in the US (as opposed to perhaps Cuba or Mexico), but on the other I also think that there are legal channels that the US has in place that should be respected. I don't believe that people that have been living here illegally should be deported, but I think that something needs to be done such that: (1) these people are counted in our census, (2) they can get proper benefits that all Americans deserve, but mostly (3) they won't be exploited for cheap labor. They deserve to be paid well for their work and it seems that a lot of organizations and individuals profit off of the practically free labor of the illegal immigrant. An illegal immigrant can be essentailly trapped in a very abusive work environment because they know their employer could turn them in to INS and thus they tolerate poor treatment. This is America and we can do better for everyone here, legally or not.
