Title: Always Watching
Characters: Asch the Bloody, Luke fon fabre, Natalia Luzu Kimlasca-Lanvaldear
Notes: It's been said that if Natalia had to choose, she'd choose Luke over Asch since he's the one she grew up with and grew to love, despite everything, and not Asch.

Asch couldn’t stand it. Natalia laughed and took a napkin, wiping Luke’s nose clean of the ice cream they were sharing. Asch grit his teeth and forced himself to calm down and kept to the shadows, watching the two have fun on their “excursion”. He wasn’t following them, they happened to be going the same way he was.

Why then, asked a small voice in his head, don’t you join them?

Because I don’t want to, Asch replies back.

The voice laughs. You do want to, it says.

You just don’t belong.

A shriek tore him from his thoughts and Asch stepped forward, hand on his hilt. His hand slipped from its place and he slipped back into the shadows when he saw what ti was. Just Luke tickling her, trying not to laugh himself when she attacked back. Soon both were screaming with laughter and Asch felt his stomach coil up.

You don’t belong, the voice repeated.

You don’t belong because you’re Asch the Bloody, God-General.

You don’t belong because you’re not him. Because you’re not

Luke fon Fabre.

You know if she had to choose, she’d choose him.

After all, seven years of memories cannot be forgotten.

Asch pushed the voice away and watched the couple, ignoring the pangs in his heart, to make sure nothing funny happened. The presence of the voice lingered, then faded with a laugh; its work was done. Of course it was true, he knew it was true and he knew it was foolish to think otherwise. She may have loved him once, but she loved Luke fon Fabre. Not Asch the Bloody. The two had stopped their tickle war and were breathless, chatting idly about something and teasing one another.

Asch couldn’t stand it, but there was nothing he could do about it. he wasn’t the dreck, not that he wanted to be, he didn’t even want to be Luke fon Fabre. He was Asch, and that was it.

Even if it meant having to give up Natalia.

Luke stopped in the middle of a sentence and squinted his eyes, widening with a worried look when he realized who it was. Asch stiffened as alarm bells went off in his head, the voice shrieking you’ve been spotted! with such glee he felt sick and he stepped further into the shadows, heart thumping painfully against his chest. Natalia asked the dreck something and Asch knew his replica knew he was there, watching them, but Luke shook his head with a small smile, acting as if he hadn’t seen or felt the pain Asch knew was there, and began the conversation anew, as distracted as it seemed.

The shadows were inviting and Asch stayed with them, watching the royal couple until they went back to the inn.

Bathed in the orange of the setting sun, Asch was suddenly aware of the pain and dropped to one knee, leaning against the wall that offered him its shadows and support, he was a dying flame in the closing darkness.
