Title: Schoolyard Troubles
Characters: Flynn, Yuri, Zagi + Alexei shown once.
Notes: Modern AU, childhood. Flynn's first time in detention gets him a black eye, a split lip, and -- a new friend?

When the teacher had taken young Flynn Scifo aside and asked him to keep the class in order while she stepped out to talk to a teacher, he hadn't realized just how hard that'd be. As soon as she walked out, the door closing firmly behind her, everyone start twisting in their seats and talking across the classroom, what was once peaceful now sounded like a roar in Flynn's ears. So he did what any kid would do: Stood on the teacher's desk with the ruler in hand and yelled.

"Hey! Quit talking!" Some students turned to stare at him, an unreadable look on their faces, and other signored him completely, chatting happily over the boy. "I said," he slammed the ruler on the desk below him and smiled in satisfaction at the twenty or so shocked faces that watched him with wide eyes, "please quiet down."

But they weren't staring at him. No, they were staring beside his foot at the glass statue that was now laying on the ground in pieces, the ruler swung too hard and too close and bumped the already precariously perched fragile thing off the desk, the crash that quieted the class making the teacher rush back in and bite her lip. Frozen but smiling, Flynn turned to face the angry teacher.

It was the first time he'd gotten detention.

Detention wasn't so bad, but there were a lot of unfavorable kids in there. Ones that had purposely destroyed school property, someone that had cursed at a teacher, older kids who had been found with girls in bathrooms they called "Mary". After been directed to a seat by the grizzled old teacher who sat back and read the paper, not caring what the kids did, Flynn sat between two boys who stopped their quarreling as he approached and set down his stuff.

"So, what're you in for?" Asked the one on his left, longish dark hair framing his face and he watched Flynn with something of a smirk. Flynn looked down at his yellow slip, and met the other's eyes.

"Disturbing the classroom--" No sooner had he said part of the sentence did the other boy laugh, hair dyed all sorts of colors in what could've been in accident or on purpose.

"What a lightweight! Didja do it like... this?" Dye Hair stood in front of him ow and rocked the desk back and forth, Flynn hanging onto it for dear life. After that settled down, Smirky rolled his eyes and stood up, stepping into Flynn's personal space.

"Nah, he probably disturbed the peace," he began, grabbing Flynn in a headlock and grinding his fist against the blond head, "by doing this!" Once he was released, Flynn gave a few coughs and rubbed his throat, already tired of the two.

Dye Hair shook his head, yellow bangs swaying with him. "I don't know, Yuri, he looks like too much of a goody-two-shoes to do that."

Smirky -- Yuri, now? Yuri thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah, you're right Zagi. Too wimpy."

"Actually," Flynn spoke louder than Zagi and cut him off fromw hatever snide remark he was going to say, "I did it like this."

And Yuri was on the floor, pinned down at the waist by the boy just a little bigger than himself. Flynn must have flown, a student said later talking to her friends, because he caught that bully by surprise faster than anyone saw. Yuri retaliated, using his free hands to try and shove the other away and towards the desk. But Flynn would have none of that, eyes sharp and narrowed as he caught both hands in his own. Below him, Yuri growled and tried to roll over to throw the boy off and succeeded, the class gathering around to chant the fabled word.

"Fight! Fight! Fight!"

It'd only been the first few punches exchanged when the teacher did something about it, pulling both children apart and sending them to the principal's office. Despite the short amount of time, Yuri had a knot on the back of his head the size if his fist from being slammed and pinned down as well as a bruiser on his cheek that he'd remember - along with this strange, fierce wimp he walked five feet behind with - and Flynn had himself a busted lip and what was sure to be a black eye. They travelled in silence, Flynn taking guilty looks back at Yuri and Yuri ignoring Flynn, eyes idly counting the number of lines on the marble floors as they went to seal their fates.

The door was open, a lone secretary motioning them to sit down as she took a call from someone. Yuri sat on one side of the five chairs, Flynn on the opposite end. Another guilty look, and Yuri was staring Flynn down harder than a dog does his own poo.

"What're you feelin' so guilty about, wimp?" Flynn, instead of glaring like Yuri thought he would, glanced down at the carpet flooring and shrugged, turning back after a minute.

"I'm sorry I hit you and stuff."

Seriously? Yuri rolled his eyes and turned away, letting Flynn see the shiner he'd left on him. "Now I know you're a wimp. Who apologizes for something like--" A gentle pressure on his face cut off the rest of what he'd been saying, wincing at the sudden touch and of the boy suddenly sitting beside him, as if he'd magicked his way over. "What the hell?"

Flynn didn't move away though, just reached out and touched it again, worry written on his face. "It looks really bad."

Yuri just stared at him, choosing silence over the obvious duh, you practically slammed your body into my face hanging in the air between them. Flynn returned the blank look, touching his own wound and blinking at the blood on his fingers in surprise. He reached over Yuri and took a tissue, pressing it with a wince to the split lip. After a quiet moment - because what else was there to talk about, the color of the walls or how the secretary was secretly picking her nose and wiping the boogers on the bottom of her desk? - Flynn leaned back in the uncomfortably straight chair and spoke.

"You're Yuri, right? I'm Flynn." Yuri gave an acknowledging nod, watching the woman behind the desk text quietly to her boyfriend or something. "I am sorry I hit you so hard. Are you sure you're fine?" Man, this kid was annoying. Yuri swatted away the questioning hand and the principal stuck his head out, white hair the only show of his age. The two stood and, at the door being opened wider, went inside.

Later kids would whisper, young and old alike, about the bravery of the two rivals facing against the old man. Principal Alexei wasn't just one of the stricter type, his hair was apparently natural and he was younger than everyone else thought. Despite that, his eyes had wisdom in them that spanned a few good rough years in high school and probably college-level fights too. He sat them down and began to speak about the importance of school, yadda yadda, Mr. Lowell, are you even listening?, and Flynn sat in rapt, if not guilty, attention to the old man. But soon it was over - though it felt like the dino had talked for hours instead of a few mintues to Yuri - and they were sent back to the detention class, a warning to Flynn about the trouble he could get into "next time" and a stern talking to to Yuri about his provacative behavior.

Despite the trouble they'd been through, Flynn had presented Yuri at lunch with a cupcake. "I heard you had a sweet tooth, and I don't like them too much myself..." was all that was said before Yuri snatched it from his hands and devoured it, shoving someone's bag away from the seat beside him and patting it until Flynn hesitantly sat down.

Somedays, Flynn wished he hadn't sat down. He could've just walked away, back to his seat at a table that was far from the cafeteria line so no one sat there, and not stayed to where the world seemed to bustle around this new -- friend of his, Yuri. But he couldn't say he regretted it either when, three weeks later, Yuri got the girl he'd been longing to ask to the little dance they held every year to accept. And Yuri didn't mind this new friendship either, not when it included someone as trustworthy as Flynn and all the heavenly sweets he could fit into his stomach everyday at lunch. One that lasted a lifetime, a kid told his sister in such a dreamy tone she pants'd him to make sure he was still a guy.
