Title: Pickup Sticks, Pickup Lines
Characters: Holy Roman Empire, Northern Italy (Young)
Notes: Hellseher is German for "psychic". It sounds a lot like Hell-seer. Funny, huh?
"Be brave, Bruder! These pickup lines are fool proof. You'll definitely win her heart!"
The memory of his brother saying these words and handing him this parchment full of magical written words of love seemed like this morning. It had been a week ago. The Holy Roman Empire watched the maid of his dreams from around the corner, studying her with intense interest. When Italy turned and saw him she jumped slightly, then started to sweep again, though frantically this time. Was she as nervous as he was? With his heart beating loudly in his ears, he swallowed his fear and strode up confidently to the girl, glancing at the paper only once before hiding it away in his cloak and awkwardly standing before the other. The young empire cleared his throat, making her look up.
"Ah... Italy!"
Her eyes started to tear up.
"Did it, er, hurt?"
Confused silence. Then,
"D-did what hurt?"
He swore he could hear her heartbeat too, but realized that was just his own.
"When you fell from heaven."
There was a long, long pause. Italy looked with slight confusion at him, and he suddenly felt very concious of his person.
"But... Ve, I didn't fall from heaven, Holy Roman."
Then she was a devil! May the devil tempt him not with such a beautiful girl, and yet there she was.
"Um, I'm not a devil either. I think."
... Hellseher?
"What's a hell-she-er? Ve, maybe it would be better not to talk outloud?"
Oh. How embarrassing! Speaking such words in front of a goddess.
"Um..."
At least he hadn't told her-
"Told me what?"
"Nothing!"
Embarrassed and in a panic of being almost found out, he ran. Or tried to. His foot got caught on Italy's broom and down he fell.
When the Holy Roman Empire awoke, he found himself alone in a bed. The door opened and Italy's face peeked in, then she came in and set a small vase full of lowers down beside the bed.
"I-Italy..."
She jumped, not realizing he was awake, and turns around to the boy on the bed.
"I'm sorry for making you fall! P-please don't hurt me, I d-didn't mean to!"
"Italy... Please, tell me... Am I in heaven?"
At her questioning look, a smile spread over his bruised face as the line came to mind.
"Because I woke up and found an angel beside me."
