The Internet seems to be a place where people can be quite honest-- by expressing themselves in double speak. That is, people are either unintentionally honest, or they self-righteously hide what they really mean with a few key phrases. For example ( Read more... )

Entirely good timing; at one of my jobs right now I'm reading (aloud, for the blind) the Washington State Voters' Pamphet. So I've been covered in this nonsense for about a week. My favorite is 'Let's cut taxes and improve our schools!' Uh... what?

Also reminds of the days when I used to post stuff like this. I find I don't quite have the balls for it anymore. Well done!

Very often, people don't use "double speak" maliciously too. They genuinely believe themselves.
The truth of that is what slays me every day. And, dare I say, the statement makes you slightly less misanthropic than you claim?

I've nothing intelligent to add, really, just... good to see I'm not alone. Hope all is well in Oh-ree-gone.

O-ray-gone is actually a pretty good place for stuff like this, especially Eugene. There are far fewer dickheads here than normal. So, in fact, you are not alone. I like the little "Let's cut taxes and improve our schools" line. I've read that a lot too, and the logic seems to be that it's either somebody else's fault ("we don't teach the right things, we're too PC and don't beat/discipline our kids, teachers demand too much, kids are too lazy, etc...").

I firmly believe that there is a "let's have more gumption" school of politics in America-- and I think it crosses both parties. That is, "we can be great again if we had more gumption..."
