Great review! I saw Roger in London in July, the second time I'd seen him. With regards to Leaving Beirut, the song was extremely well received in London, no boos at all that I was aware of, in a crowd of around 40,000. Bush is very much a figure of hate in England, as is Tony Blair, who I believe was also name-checked in the song. The resentment of Bush and Blair in England is partly because the Iraq war has resulted in very negative feelings towards the British from the rest of Europe, although the majority of people over here opposed the war.

Anyhow, Bush-bashing aside, the meaning I took from the song was as a criticism of the "collateral damage" that the Iraq war has resulted in, and a call for people to empathise with people living in desperate poverty in the many war-torn nations that exist in this world. I mean, what sort of war is it in which ten times as many civilians are killed as army personnel? And Roger Waters is an example of how just one death through conflict can cause so much grief.

Stay free, shine on!
