Parents have a real talent for screwing things up, don't they? Who knows what kind of friend Eric would have been, but it certainly was worth the surcharge to find out. You did a great job with this.
Weirdly all this is relate-able. Since mom was working I had my maid's kids to stay with me the whole day. And I use to do household chores ( which was actually the maid's job) with them just to prove my friendship.
Very sad. The thing is, kids that young often don't think about the moral implications of things when they do them. So he might not have considered the impact of his actions. The sadder thing, though, is that it ended your friendship.
The desperation to keep a friendship when you're a kid without many friends comes across so well here. I had similar experiences as a child not with money but with thinking whatever needed to be done to keep the friend.
