Character Information
Name: Ryoko Asakura
Source Canon: the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series (I'd be playing primarily from the anime/movie; not so much the manga, the Disappearance of Yuki Nagato, or the last few novels I haven't read yet)
Age: 3-4, appears/behaves 16-17
Role In Canon: an antagonist
History:
wiki; taken post-Disappearance
Personality: Ryoko Asakura seems to be a normal enough high school girl, at first. Friendly and cheerful, she’s a model freshman and class president. Her personality is sweet and demure, though she can act cutesy and cocky when trying to get her way. She’s the best of the best on that Taniguchi Scale of Hot Girls, ranking an AA+ not only because of her beauty, but also her athleticism and intelligence and overall charm.
However, this is a façade. Ryoko’s true self is a different story: she’s a humanoid interface program and operates under the hive mind of the Integrated Data Entity. Despite that, she’s developed a personality of her own after hanging around earth for so long. While her superior Yuki Nagato stayed low-key in her surveillance methods, preferring to watch Haruhi Suzumiya from a distance (until she was forcibly drafted into the SOS Brigade), Ryoko Asakura was much less patient. She constantly tried to interact with Haruhi, striking up one-sided conversations, protecting her from others' eyes when she changed for p.e. class. But when these incessant attempts to get closer to her target failed, her independent streak prompted her to take matters into her own hands and use a more radical approach.
As an alien, Ryoko is aware of but doesn't quite understand human morality and concepts like fear of death. More than a little sociopathic, she catches on easily to the thoughts even if she has no idea what exactly they stand for. She has a semi-childlike, semi-scientific curiosity in seeing how humans respond to various stimuli, to the point that she’s perfectly willing to fulfill her objective by even (or especially) murdering Haruhi's friend to provoke a reaction. Ryoko exhibits a sadistic streak, covered with fake innocence and well-meaning. In her fight with Kyon, despite having the ability to paralyze and finish him early on, she toys with her prey and lets him try futilely to run and fight and escape before going in for the kill. Apparently, she’s not above gloating over her victim’s eminent defeat.
(edit!)
Since all of the humanoid interfaces created by the Integrated Data Entity operate as spy programs with the sole purpose of observing Haruhi Suzumiya, Ryoko's interests and goals are pretty singular. Her utmost priority is overseeing Haruhi and the data she could generate--later, she tweaked this a little into 'provoking Haruhi by killing her friend and overseeing the data she could generate'. It's not really known whether she is fully capable of loving or hating or fearing anything like humans do, since data entities apparently view emotions as 'errors'. In addition, she appears in practically every single one of her scenes with composure and a smile: whether it's cheerfully informing her victim that she intends to kill him, cheerfully spearing her superior through with her transformed blade-like arms, or even cheerfully lamenting how she failed her mission when Yuki Nagato finally terminates her. The few things she does seem to have a unique interest in are human reactions and the concept of autonomy--questions of free will and the like.
Though she puts up an amazing impression of a perfectly normal high school girl, she doesn't seem to attach any value in concepts like human life at all, so it's unlikely that she genuinely treasures any of her friends at school. The three people she holds any significant connections to in canon are Haruhi Suzumiya (her study subject), Yuki Nagato (her superior), and Kyon (her victim). She's extremely interested in the capabilities (if not necessarily the psychological well-being) of the first, and only cares about the latter as long as he can further her goals. Her relationship with Yuki is a little convoluted: she's surprised when Yuki disagrees with her, but just decides to kill her too. However, in the Disappearance alternate universe, where Ryoko is (probably) human, she's Yuki's best friend and is willing to stab a mutual acquaintance (Kyon) when he seemingly tries to attack her. Canon doesn't really specify if she'd remember her life as her alternate self, but I'd probably play her with the memories so that she'd relate very slightly more to humans.
Despite everything, Ryoko has the potential for 'humanity'/emotions, or autoevolution from her static state as a data entity. She does do little things that might not be explained away as playing the part of a human, like giving gifts to her neighbors, for instance. She's sadistic enough to explain to Kyon in detail her motivations for killing him, and also considerate enough to Haruhi that she protects her modesty (even though apparently she doesn't care too much for the negative psychological effects Haruhi might suffer as a result of Kyon's death). It's clear that she has the potential to learn to develop emotions, like Yuki does, but she's still a bit of a free radical in the meantime.
Abilities: (copied from the
wiki)
- Superhuman strength and reflexes: Asakura could throw a knife with considerable force, then use her quick reflexes to catch one flying at her. Asakura could leap incredible distances (once leaping 5 meters when surprised).
- Data jurisdiction, her specialty: Enables Asakura to "cut off" a portion of reality into a "bubble dimension", enabling her to engage in combat without revealing her presence to anyone outside the field. Asakura could request permission from the IDE to expand the field. Yuki Nagato was able to force her way into Asakura's space, explaining that her individual programs were weak. Kuyou Suou was able to escape from the zone, forcing Kimidori to repair the damaged space.
- Property manipulation: In a data jurisdiction space, Asakura was able to create "icicles" from the surrounding structure and use them to attack an enemy. Yuki Nagato could use this ability in "reverse" to counter Ryoko Asakura's attacks. However, Nagato didn't display the ability to counter her more impressive attacks which involved generating metal rods from desks in front of her, then "hurling" them at Nagato. This ability required vocalization.
- Asakura could also telekinetically hurl objects such as desks, stop a desk being thrown at her (a visible field appeared to protect her when she did so) and even freeze a human in place. This ability did not require vocalization.
- Knife mastery: Asakura could throw a knife with such force that it would continue to vibrate and attempt to stab its target after being thrown. She could also redirect its path in flight without vocalization, even if the knife was thrown by someone else. The knife dissolved when Asakura used some powers, and could also be dissolved by another humanoid interface.
- Asakura appeared to value her knife, asking for it back when Emiri Kimidori caught it. (When Emiri threw it back, Asakura used her property manipulation ability to redirect the knife at an opponent, then caught it when the opponent dodged.)
- Physical transformation: Asakura can transform her arms into large blades. She used these to skewer Nagato during their confrontation.
- Data containment field: By holding onto another being, Asakura could generate a field of geometric shapes which would attempt to capture them. However, Kuyou Suou was able to break the field.
- To use this ability, Asakura chanted "Initiating offensive data assault." The ground was affected, and her knife dissolved as she did so.
she might also be able to use
Yuki Nagato's powers--since she's only a back-up for Yuki, she may not be as strong or have all of Yuki's abilities. as is, Ryoko is still pretty crazily powerful--tell me if there's a problem!
