I just had the weirdest conversation, with this girl from Georgia. She goes to school with my first grade crush (haha). Anyway, the three of us were arguing over the way women were treated in the south, and it made me cringe.

GoletaSB: i think that southern belief that the guys need to do everything is absolutely ridiculousGATORGURL85: WHAT? ( Read more... )

She's from florida, going to Georgia Tech. Sean (GoletaSB) is convinced she has TBS (Tech Bitch Syndrome), and I'd tend to agree.

Northern Hospitality > Southern gentleman.

When I say "put on something cute, and get in the kitchen" I at least say please.

This girl tried to tell me that southern hospitality makes it all okay. Sean and I decided this "southern hospitality" is a myth.

Wait, who was your first grade crush? I feel like I should remember since I knew you in first grade.

Sean Lynch <3

His brother Brian was a year older than us, and he had a little brother too. He moved to GA in 2nd grade, i think.

boys should open the door for me. always. i know i can do it myself, but it's a gesture that makes me mushy.

but i feel uncomfortable when they pay for more than one dinner.

just a personal preference, i guess.

If it's voluntary, that's awesome, more power to them. But this girl was saying that if the guy didn't do it, they weren't worthy of her and she'd dump them.

That was a little extreme, to me.

Well, Doug is a Southern boy. He has never let me pay for a meal or a movie. I paid for the hotel when he came home from Afghanistan but other than that, he has always paid for everything. He always opens the door for me, be it the car door or the door to a restaurant or store. That always makes me feel special. I know that's not a common or popular thing these days, but it does. I like that he treats me that way. I am willing to pay for some things, but he has certain feelings and beliefs and I respect that. I can definitely say he would never throw an apron at me and say "bitch, make me a sandwich" though.

Anyway I don't know what my point was, but that's my experience. It's not about what is "expected" and I certainly have never been treated like this before...but it's what works for us. He respects me and I have no doubts about that.

That's awesome that Doug does all that for you, more power to him. I'm definitely not saying it's a bad thing, we'd all love to be treated that way, but the fact that she EXPECTS it from everyone she meets, and judges people poorly if they don't do it kills me.

Sean was sad, he can't get dates because he doesn't have the money to pay for these things and the girls expect that from him...and that's not fair, in my book.

Well, I agree there, she sounds a little bit Nazi-ish about it. And I have to admit, even though I never expected it before, I have definitely been spoiled. Not necessarily with the paying thing, because I do have a job and would not mind paying for some thing, but with the door holding and all...Doug has spoiled me for anyone else. I get a little frustrated if someone doesn't hold the door when they see me right behind them...hehe. But I certainly don't write them off or think less of them as a person if they don't. I have been known to mutter under my breath though...lol.

Like Kat said, I will hold the door for whoever is behind me, be they male or female. It's kind of rude in a general way not to, don't you think?! Common courtesy is never a bad thing if you ask me.
