I think it's worth remembering that you're 26 (25? I think you're older than me, right?), and that it's totally okay not to have everything figured out yet. I haven't talked to you as much as I've wanted to over the past year, which is definitely my fault, but the impression I get is that you can see yourself doing things other than being an English professor, it's just that the economy is not providing the sorts of opportunities you need. Also, what was wrong with your application was that it was one of probably several hundred for probably 5-10 spots.

and I know, I know, but I have this huge fear that even with a crappy economy if I don't have meaningful career building employment right now, I will be underqualified and sad and grasping at straws for the rest of my adult life.
