And leaves you so excited, but alone

This was intended to be a meme that I snagged from sioniann, regarding my "personal canon" of one of my OTPs. I decided to do it for MomoKai, but I got a little bit off-track and it....grew? After it lost any resemblance to the original meme, I decided to just keep going. Bonus marks for guessing where the hell I'm getting these lyrics from. :D

"Drives You to the Wall", Momoshiro/Kaidoh | 1,015 words | PG-13 | Prince of Tennis

* Momoshiro used to bike down to the river to watch Kaidoh train sometimes. Just to see what he was up to, you know, not that he cared. It was usually really boring, watching the viper do one-handed push-ups or whatever. Except for that one time when Inui looked right at the bushes Momoshiro was hiding in with one of his creepy, all-knowing expressions. Momoshiro had to explain away a few cuts and bruises the next day, after scrambling through the bushes back to his bike before Inui-senpai could tell Kaidoh that he had been spying on them. Not that he had been, but Kaidoh might have thought differently.

* In their third year, Kaidoh takes Momoshiro out for burgers sometimes, because it's the only time he can get him to shut up for a good hour or so while he gets the training schedule done. He also does it because he knows that Momoshiro misses seeing Eiji-senpai as much as he used to, but he won't admit to it. Sometimes Ryoma tags along, which is even more productive, because he can distract Momoshiro and even make the occasional suggestion about tournament rosters.

* Momoshiro can read Kaidoh's moods pretty well and he knows exactly how to get him pissed off. He can irk Kaidoh in a bunch of tiny ways that pile together until Kaidoh is practically buzzing with anger and frustration. It's almost like a game - a piece of scrunched-up paper flicked at the back of Kaidoh's head in the library, a few bits of Kaidoh's lunch covertly snatched in the noisy cafeteria, tying his banadana into a series of intricate knots while Kaidoh is in the shower - and before he knows it, Kaidoh's hissing and ready for a fight and Momo couldn't be happier.

* Kaidoh has become increasingly aware of where they fight, ever since that one time in the locker room turned into an impromptu make-out session. It wouldn't have been nearly as bad if it had been Oishi-senpai who found them. There would have been a lot of blushing and awkward half-explanations all around, but with a general consensus to just ignore it and pretend it never happened. Fuji-senpai, on the other hand, waited a full five minutes before even announcing his presence. Kaidoh wonders if he was smiling like that the whole time. He's not sure whether that's a reason to keep the fights as public as possible or to go somewhere where they wouldn't be interrupted. But he's pretty sure it explains why Inui-senpai started accompanying him to his after-practice training sessions for a month afterwards.

* They have rules, even if they are mostly unspoken. They don't talk about kissing or that handjob incident in the equipment room. They fight at least three times a week, five times a week before a tournament (just to get properly fired up). They also have some rules that neither of them were aware of until they were broken. When Momoshiro goes out to a movie with Tachibana An, they have a fight right on the courts during next morning's practice and Kaidoh punches Momoshiro's face so hard that he breaks Momo's nose.

Kaidoh runs all the way home and lies to his mother about skipping class, saying he feels sick. It's not much of a lie. He lies on his bed all day and stares at the ceiling. At some point, Echizen's cat wriggles in through the open window and makes himself comfortable on Kaidoh's stomach, purring loudly until Kaidoh's breathing evens out and he dozes off. When he wakes up, the cat is gone and Momoshiro is sitting awkwardly on the edge of Kaidoh's bed with a serious expression that contrasts rather badly with the giant white bandage on his nose. They get about as close as they can to actual conversation, which mostly involves long silences with "...yeah," and "...idiot" at intervals. Then they make out for awhile and the ugly, twisted knot in Kaidoh's stomach finally unravels, much to his relief.

* After the Nationals, they play each other after practice almost every day and sometimes, when Eiji-senpai and Oishi-senpai aren't busy studying, they'll play a game of doubles. Neither of them willingly agreed to their combination at the beginning, but Momoshiro is almost disappointed to know that as senior members, they'll probably be playing mostly singles now. They were getting good together, really good.

* Everyone is surprised when Tezuka makes Kaidoh buchou - especially Kaidoh. He takes it seriously, of course, which, Inui-senpai points out to him, probably explains a lot about Tezuka's decision. Momoshiro remarks that the freshman only listen to him because they're terrified of him. But even though neither of them will admit it, they make a good team. Kaidoh makes the rosters, schedules and ranking blocks. He makes sure that everyone works hard, because he is determined to lead them to the Nationals. He hates to think about disappointing his senpai and letting Tezuka-buchou think he got careless with his new responsibility. Momoshiro, on the other hand, is an good fukubuchou. He balances Kaidoh's stern commands with his easygoing nature and the freshman love him. But despite what Momoshiro says about the freshman wetting their pants over the Snake Captain’s hiss, the freshman respect Kaidoh and work hard for him. It isn't easy, running a team. But they're doing okay.

* Momoshiro used to kiss him fast and hard, angry and wet. It was a blur of sensation - hands, lips, teeth, tongues. They never looked at each other and they never spoke. Now they go slower and that scares Kaidoh. One day after a particularly grueling practice, while they are sitting on a bench off the courts and looking over the next week's schedule together, Momoshiro leans over and kisses Kaidoh's temple, just below his bandana. Momoshiro gives him a cocky, confident grin when Kaidoh whips his head around to stare at him and eventually, he gives him a grudging half-smile in return.

"Moron," Kaidoh says, almost affectionately and Momoshiro hums agreeably in response, leaning against the back of the bench, closing his eyes against the brightness of the setting sun and folding his arms behind his head.
